Three different ways to listen for free
Public-domain recordings: Eligible classic works and recordings may be made available free of charge, subject to the applicable rights. Public libraries: Services such as Libby let eligible borrowers access audiobooks using a participating library card; availability, loan periods and waiting lists can apply. Trials and promotions: A temporary free period can require a payment method and later become paid.
Before choosing an app, check whether “free” describes a permanent catalog, a limited loan, or only a trial.
Where to find public-domain audiobooks
LibriVox offers volunteer-read recordings of public-domain texts. Check the recording’s license and the applicable copyright rules where you live. For book text and bibliographic context, Project Gutenberg is useful, but it primarily provides ebooks, not a universal audiobook-streaming service.
Searching for “free classic audiobooks,” “public domain audiobooks” or an author plus “audiobook” may reveal lawful editions. Always check the actual provider and region.
What a free audiobook app should explain
- What is included without payment and what is optional.
- Whether the download works offline after it completes.
- Whether a card, account or ongoing membership is required.
- Whether access expires after a loan period.
- Where the audio comes from and which permissions apply.
An app may be free to install but still contain optional purchases or advertisements. Read the listing rather than assuming every feature is free.
Free classics are different from current bestsellers
Public-domain catalogs tend to be strongest in older literature: adventure, detective fiction, science fiction, poetry and other classics. Modern bestsellers often remain under copyright and require a purchase, licensed streaming plan or library loan. A free public-domain library should not promise every new book.

BookEar GO and the free-library approach
BookEar GO is being built around a free public-domain audiobook catalog for Android, with offline listening and optional use on compatible Wear OS watches. The app is not yet available as a public Google Play release. Optional paid features may be introduced, but the public-domain catalog is intended to be accessible without an audiobook subscription.
