How to Listen to Smartwatch Audiobooks with Bluetooth Headphones

Phone-free audiobook listening fails if your headphones are still connected to the phone. Here is how to tell which device actually produces the sound.

Pair headphones with the watch, not just the phone

In the smartwatch Bluetooth settings, enable pairing for the earbuds and connect them to the watch. Headphones already paired to an Android phone may switch audio output when the phone wakes up; multi-point and automatic switching can make this confusing.

Check the watch's list of connected audio devices. A Bluetooth icon on a phone is not evidence that the earbuds are connected to the watch. Pairing menus differ by watch model and OS version, so follow the device manufacturer's instructions.

Find out where the audiobook is playing

Open the actual watch audiobook app and choose a title stored on the watch. Then check the media output selection and watch volume. If you see a remote-control screen for playback on Android, your phone may still be producing the audio.

Move the phone out of range temporarily. If the sound stops, revisit the app mode, downloaded status and the current headphone connection. See our guide to offline audiobook modes on watches.

Test a downloaded book, not a stream

A watch can receive Bluetooth audio while an audiobook is streaming over Wi-Fi or LTE. That does not make the session offline. If you want to run without your phone or network coverage, finish downloading the entire title using a compatible app before leaving.

  1. Confirm the book appears in the watch's offline library.
  2. Play the first track and a later chapter.
  3. Take the phone away and disable watch network access for a short controlled test if your app permits it.
  4. Check whether playback and bookmarks or resume behavior continue as expected.

No sound or repeated switching?

  • Re-select the watch as the active Bluetooth connection to the earbuds.
  • Pause audio on the phone and reopen the watch player.
  • Check the watch's volume and media output settings rather than only the earbud volume.
  • For a test, turn off automatic switching on other paired devices if your earbuds support that control.
  • Try an alternative pair of headphones to isolate an earbud-specific issue.

Do not factory reset your watch as the first troubleshooting step. Re-pairing the headphone connection is usually a smaller, reversible test.

Storage, battery and long sessions

Wireless earbuds, playback decoding, exercise tracking, GPS and an always-on display all use power. The exact impact depends on the watch and other running apps. Reduce screen time, prepare the audio in advance and confirm the watch has space for the complete book.

If the watch shows a nearly full storage warning, clear only files that are no longer needed. Removing an audiobook from the phone does not necessarily free space on the watch, or vice versa.

BookEar GO and compatible watches

BookEar GO targets Android and compatible Wear OS watches, with an optional phone-free audio experience. Final model support and settings will be published with the Google Play release. For troubleshooting beyond Bluetooth, see Wear OS audiobook connection and playback problems.
